Gregg Popovich Keeps It Real

Greg Popovich is a great coach. He is a four time champion and has lead the Spurs to 11 straight seasons of 50+ wins, but all of that pales in comparison to his sneaky sense of humor.

With the Spurs having the best record at the All Star break, Coach Popovich got to be the head coach of the West squad. This was also the first year that Blake Griffin, Kevin Love, and Russell Westbrook were selected as All Stars. To commemorate that selection, GQ has Kevin Love blog about his All Star weekend, which is as entertaining as you would expect it to be. There is however, one little anecdote that Kevin shared that really stood out in my mind:

Spurs coach Greg Popovich led the meeting, and he was pretty funny. He said, “Guys, we’re gonna go out and have fun. We’re not really gonna run any sets. We’re gonna get up and down. And all of you are gonna play a lot and get good minutes-except for probably Russell, Blake and Kevin. You guys are all f–ked.”

That is just brilliant.

With all the success that Popovich has had in San Antonio and his great, dry sense of humor, it is a surprise that more free agents don’t want to play for him.
