Steve Nash is an awesome dude

Posted on | June 27, 2010 | 2 Comments

Steve Nash has been in South Africa during the 2010 FIBA World Cup. Here is video as he stopped off in Soweto, a primarily black-occupied part of the country. It is hard to imagine many other NBA players appearing as comfortable and giving of his time, when mixing with people on the street that he has just stumbled across. Steve Nash is one cool dude.

Respect to Steve Nash's experience in South Africa. However your post overlooks the many NBA players who have gone to Africa for a variety of reasons, always mingling with people that they "just stumble across".

First there are the players past & present who are from Africa or have parents/family from/in Africa. Dikembe, Hakeem, Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, DJ Mbenga, Stephane Lasme, Soumaila Samake, Ousmane, Cisse, 11 players from Nigeria including Okafor and Udoka, Serge Ibaka, DeSagana Diop and 6 other Senegalese players, Manute Bol and Luol Deng.

Then there are the players like Alex English, Bob McAdoo, Marcus Camby and Ron Artest who have made trips to Africa with the NBA. Do you think those guys were not "mixing with people on the street"?

Ron Artest & Magic Johnson have built AIDS clinics in Africa. Their experiences there touched them so profoundly that they put their money and their time to the million dollar projects of building medical facilities. You don't think they were "mixing with people on the street?"

There are many others unmentioned here who visit Africa on their own time, not with any organizations like the NBA or media outlets. Bynum is at the World Cup right now. You don't think he's "mixing with people on the street"?

Your post gives Nash credit for doing something that many NBA players have done. The difference between Nash and the players I've mentioned is that he's white. Maybe you could say that it's hard to imagine many white players spending time on the streets mixing with people, because that doesn't happen too often does it?

Or you could perpetuate the Christopher Columbus approach that places aren't discovered and things aren't noteworthy until they're done by a white person.

So it's actually easy to imagine NBA players appearing as comfortable with South Africans in Soweto because so many NBA players have been there before. It's harder to imagine that people will stop overhyping white people for doing things that nonwhites have been doing for years, decades, centuries.
