NBA Deadline approaching…Who will buy a Championship?

Two years ago we had the deadline deal of Pau Gasol for a few peanuts and Marc Gasol, Pau’s younger brother who has turned out alright. But these deadline deals are all about the money; losing teams want to save as much of it as they can, dealing all-star caliber players for much less then their values would indicate to save a few bucks on a sorry season.

Yesterday was no exception, the always horrid Clippers dealt Marcus Camby for even less then peanuts. Steve Blake and Outlaw? These guys would have trouble cracking the rotation at the YMCA on Broadway. That basketball league is mighty competitive I have to add. Camby is as good a player you can add on a title seeking team; unselfish, world class defense, rebounding skills like Rodman, expiring contract!

Camby was not only an expiring deal, but a great addition to any contending team, players like him were hard to come by. I don’t blame the Clippers for trading him, they are what they are, but holy crap that’s the best deal they were offered? Mike Dunleavy is doing the impossible, he is doing worse as a GM then he did as a coach. I think Dunleavy is like a bad Deal or No Deal player, where the second he is offered the first 5K offer with all his top numbers still in play he screams “Deal!” Camby was an attractive piece for the Nuggets, Cavs, Celtics even. Any team could use a seven foot big man with defensive skills. I can’t believe there wasn’t at least one offer he could have gotten with an even okay player.

At least make a trade like the Camby one right at the deadline, why days before it when the offers would only have intensified? This stumps me more then a viewing of Lost or The Matrix. So it looks like we will have a few more sales happening this week with Amare being the top dog in the bunch. Players like Maggette, Kevin Martin, Ray Allen might be switching teams for a short while.

I did laugh when I read today that the Spurs were looking to deal Richard Jefferson! Jefferson, way way past his prime is making 14 million this year and get this: 15 Million NEXT year too! Trading Jefferson with his horrible contract and cap hit for next years golden free agent haul is probably something along the lines of a Mission Impossible 5 plot. Sure the Spurs want to trade him, the Knicks have wanted to trade Jerome James and Eddie Curry but no team has Isiah Thomas as GM so that will never happen again, unless……Mike Dunleavy gets the offer.
